FAQ: The One Micronesia Campaign

One of our 2012 Web Banners
What is it? The One Micronesia Campaign is a region-wide awareness and fundraising effort launched by The Micronesia Challenge in March 2012.

What's the message?  The message is one of unity.  That even though Micronesia spans over 6.71 million square kilometers of the Pacific, we are a singular community of island nations with one oceanic legacy.

Where can I experience it?  Primarily, The One Micronesia Campaign is a social-media campaign that revolves around a Facebook community (www.facebook.com/OneMicronesia) that targets two specific audiences: (1) The Native Micronesian Islander and (2) the Traveler to Micronesia.

Explain how it targets the Micronesian Islander?  Well, we know that Facebook has become a powerful way for islanders to connect with their families and island communities not only because of the ubiquity of Facebook, but the varying broadband/internet bandwiths inevitably bring Micronesians all over the world to Facebook's unifying technical platform.  In addition, our partner NGOs and conservation groups have Facebook pages which makes networking easier and more effective. So reaching out and building an awareness among Micronesian people makes sense on Facebook.  That's why The One Micronesia Campaign is built around it.

How then does it reach out to the traveler? In this day and age, the first time any of us "visits" or experiences a new place is on the Internet. The One Micronesia Facebook community allows for that. The FB community enables an immersion of the conservation story of the Micronesian region, which is very important to the Micronesia Challenge.  In addition, the One Micronesia Campaign expands that first-time "digital" Internet experience of Micronesia by providing on-the-ground "tactile" opportunities that build upon the initial web experience, such as the donation box program found on all the islands, and upcoming airport and retail opportunities to be launched in 2013 and beyond.
