Last week, Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) researchers partnered with Yapese Conservation Officers and Dr. Robert van Woesik from the Florida Institute of Technology to survey 56 study sites in Yap. The researchers surveyed food-fish abundance and size, coral communities, and coral disease. The study examined differences around the island and gathered information that will help Yap optimize their conservation strategies, and prepare for regional resilience to climate and local disturbances. The Yapese sites were located in a variety of habitats, such as lagoons, fringing and patch reefs, and outer reefs. In September, 2013, the team will continue their surveys in Pohnpei and Kosrae. This study isfunded by The Nature Conservancy.
